31 Compelling Desktop Blogging Clients To Make You Forget Your Online Editor

Following the recent post 10 Reasons You Should Be Using A Blogging Client, I promised to come up with a review of the best desktop blogging clients available for your blogging platform and your operating system.

 

So in this post, I will review some of the best desktop blogging tools, guaranteed to make you forget your online editor.  Most of the reviewed blogging clients will be free, but there will be some commercial clients which will also be reviewed, without any affiliation from my part, rest assured.

 

Windows Live Writer – Desktop Blogging Client

Windows Live Writer (WLW) is a free product from Microsoft, allowing you to blog from your Windows desktop to multiple platforms like Windows Live, Wordpress, Blogger, LiveJournal, TypePad, and many more.  WLW allows easy management of images in post, simple video insertion and WYSIWYG editing.  WLW is extensible by numerous plugins, which are already available freely on the Internet.  Windows Live Writer is a solid product and very good choice if you are blogging from Windows.

 

BlogJet – Desktop Blogging Client

BlogJet is a commercial desktop blogging tool which is rich in features. It supports the WordPress, TypePad, Blogger, Drupal platforms, and more.  It is a WYSIWYG editor, with powerful image handling capabilities.  It seamlessly integrates third-party services like Flickr, Youtube, etc.  BlogJet also has an integrated spellchecker, a text auto-replace feature, ability to attach files to your blog posts, intuitive post management and searching, word count for each post and blog statistics, include custom smileys in posts, implements proper typography, enabling easy management of multiple blogs, all built in a nice user interface.  To configure itself, BlogJet just need your blog address and it automatically detects the blog type and adjusts its setting to your new blog.

 

Flock Browser – Desktop Blogging Client

Flock is basically a free web browser, which has an inbuilt blog editor in it.   Using Flock, you can then easily blog from an application which can be used both as browser or blog editor.

 

Deepest Sender – Desktop Blogging Client

Deepest Sender is a free blogging client which works inside Firefox, SeaMonkey, and XULRunner.  Using Firefox, you can just use the shortcut or click on the button to access Deepest Sender.  It can handle multiple accounts from multiple blog platforms.  It has a WYSIWYG editor, spellchecking and crash recovery features.  Deepest Sender can run in the Firefox sidebar, load and save drafts and work in offline mode.  One other advantage of Deepest Sender is that it is cross-platform.  It will work on any operating system on which Firefox will work.

 

Ecto – Desktop Blogging Client

Ecto is a commercial MacOS X blogging tool which allows you to blog from the Mac desktop.  Ecto provides a WYSIWYG editor to write your posts within.  Using Ecto, you can easily scale, convert, thumbnail your images.  Ecto also enables you to preview your posts within itself, using Safari’s Webkit Rendering Engine.  Ecto supports multiple blogging platforms and multiple blogging accounts.

 

Bleezer – Desktop Blogging Client

Bleezer is a free desktop blogging client which works on multiple operating systems like Windows, OS X, and Linux.  It can also interact multiple blogging platforms like Wordpress, Blogger, etc.  Bleezer comes with a WYSIWYG editor, with integrated support for FTP image upload to your server.  Using user-defined shortcuts, you can even setup custom HTML markup inside your posts.  Bleezer has an inbuilt spellchecker and can work in both online and offline modes.

 

BloGTK – Desktop Blogging Client

BloGTK is an open-source blogging tool which allows GNOME users to blog easily from the desktop to blogging platforms like Blogger, Movable Type, WordPress, and more.  BloGTK was written in Python and PyGTK and was design with operating speed in mind. 

 

Drivel – Desktop Blogging Client

Drivel is another free blog editor for the GNOME desktop interface.  Drivel supports many blogging platforms including LiveJournal, Blogger, MovableType, Advogato, Wordpress, Drupal etc.  Drivel has spellchecking capabilities and HTML syntax highlighting.  Drivel has a crash recovery feature incase of application or computer crash and also allows you to blog in both online and offline modes.

 

Gnome Blog – Desktop Blogging Client

Gnome blogs, as its named suggests, is a free blog editor for the GNOME desktop interface.  It has WYSIWYG editing capabilities, inbuilt spellchecker, and drag and drop image addition to blog entries.  Gnome Blog allows you to blog to platforms like LiveJournal, Blogger, MovableType, Advogato, etc.

 

Newz Crawler – Desktop Blogging Client

Newz Crawler is a free 3 in 1 application which acts as rss/atom reader, browser and blog client for Windows.  It main purpose is to enable users to blog news quickly when you find them through the feeds.  Its blog editor has full WYSIWYG editing capabilities, and enables you to blog to Blogger, MetaWeblog, MovableType, LiveJournal.

 

ScribeFire – Desktop Blogging Client

ScribeFire is a free Firefox add-on which includes a blog editor inside the Firefox browsing environment.  It then allows you to easily post your articles to supported platforms like Wordpress, Blogger, Xanga and more.  ScribeFire can display word counts, do live previews, has spellchecking and can do much more.

 

Chrysanth WebStory – Desktop Blogging Client

Chrysanth WebStory is a free blog editor which allows you to easily manage multiple blogs from multiple platforms.  Chrysanth WebStory can also backup all your online posts to your computer and allows you to protect it with a password.  It automatically creates backups of all your posts. You can write your posts through the WYSIWYG editor and Chrysanth WebStory automatically uploads your images to your server through FTP.

 

JBlogEditor – Desktop Blogging Client

JBlogEditor is a free blog editor, written in JAVA, which allows you manage and publish to Wordpress, Blogger and JRoller blogs.  It can save drafts locally for later publishing, has the ability to edit multiple posts simultaneously and has inbuilt advanced HTML tag completion.  JBlogEditor allows you to manage multiple blogs account and runs on various platforms like Windows, Linux and MacOS X.  Unfortunately, development of JBlogEditor has ceased, but it can be still downloaded and used.

 

LIPIDr – Desktop Blogging Client

LIPIDr is a free blog editor which allows you to edit blogs from Windows 2000 and up.  LIPIDr can assign shortcuts to HTML tags so that they can be easily be called upon when needed.  It can automatically post your new entry to Mister Wong and has an integrated FTP client which allows you to upload your files to your server.  You can manage multiple blogs easily with LIPIDr.  Wordpress is fully supported by LIPIDr, and S9Y, Nucleus and Movable Type are partially supported.  A downside to LIPIDr is that it does not have a WYSIWYG editor, just a plain HTML editor is included.

  

 

QTM – Desktop Blogging Client

QTM is an open source blog editor which allows you to manage blogs on the following platforms: Wordpress, Movable Type, Drupal, etc.  However, the Blogger platform is not supported.  QTM works on Windows, MacOS X and different flavors of Linux (SUSE, Fedora, Mandriva, Ubuntu and Debian).

 

Blogo – Desktop Blogging Client

Blogo is commercial blogging client which allows you to manage Wordpress, Blogger, Typepad, Typo, Drupal, Joomla, and Expression Engine blogs and also allows you to handle multiple blog accounts.  The interface of Blogo is very nicely designed.  You can easily insert images inside your blog posts and resize/crop them accordingly.  Blogo also enables easy insertion of videos, widgets, etc.  Blogo has a powerful rich text editor.  Blogo can also go to full screen mode for a larger workspace and offline mode if you have no internet connectivity.

 

MarsEdit – Desktop Blogging Client

MarsEdit is a commercial desktop blogging client for your Mac.  MarsEdit works with different blog types, including WordPress, Blogger, Tumblr, TypePad, Movable Type, LiveJournal, Drupal, and Vox.  MarsEdit allows you to preview you posts in the same template as that of your original blog, making you get a better idea of how your published post will look like.  MarsEdit also allows you to define Macros to auto-replace text as you type.  You can also integrate MarsEdit with your favorite text editor like BBEdit, SubEthaEdit, TextMate, or TextWrangler.  You can also work in both offline and online modes.

 

Thingamablog – Desktop Blogging Client

Thingamablog is free a cross-platform (Windows, Mac OS X, Linux) blog editor which supports the LiveJournal, Blogger, MovableType, Advogato, Wordpress, Drupal blogging platforms.  With Thingamablog you can manage multiple blogs and multiple accounts easily.  Thingamablog also works as an integrated feed reader, allowing you to read your feeds and blog about interesting finds later.

 

w.bloggar – Desktop Blogging Client

w.bloggar is a free Windows blog editor which allows you to blog to multiple platforms (Wordpress, MovableType, TypePad, Drupal, b2evolution, Nucleus CMS, Squarespace, Community Server, BlogEngine.NET).  You can save your posts locally and work in both online and offline modes.  Additionally w.bloggar provides  a portable version which allows you to blog on the move.

 

 

RocketPost – Desktop Blogging Client

RocketPost is a commercial blog editor compatible with most blog platforms like Blogger (new and old), Movable Type, WordPress, TypePad, MSN Spaces, BlogHarbor, Drupal, dasBlog, BlogEngine.NET, .Text and SquareSpace.  It supports full WYSIWYG editing.  You can save all your posts locally and edit them without the need to download them later again.   RocketPost allows easy image insertion into posts and resizing/cropping/compressing images is very easy using RocketPost.  The blog editor also has integrated spellchecking capabilities, automatic word expansion, caps lock safety features and more.  RocketPost works on Windows only (Vista, XP, 2003, 2000, NT, Me, 98).

 

BlogDesk – Desktop Blogging Client

BlogDesk is a free blog editor which allows you to work with WordPress, MovableType, Drupal, Serendipity and ExpressionEngine blogs.  BlogDesk is equipped with a WYSIWYG editor.  Using this blog editor, you can easily manage multiple blogs from the same interface.  Using the ImageWizard image editor included, you can easily crop, resize, rotate your images and then insert them in your posts.  BlogDesk also has built-in spellchecking capabilities and many more features.

Post2Blog is a free blog editor with WYSIWYG support.  It has an inbuilt spellchecker, automatically image uploading, post text/images from Internet Explorer or Firefox using the browser toolbar, add Technorati, Buzzwords tags to blog posts easily and  more.  The supported blog platforms are Blogger, WordPress, Typepad, Movable Type.

 

Qumana – Desktop Blogging Client

Qumana is a free blog editor which works on both Windows and Mac.  It has WYSIWYG editing capabilities, spellchecker, Technorati tagging, easy image uploads, online and offline blogging, multi-window editing.  It also provides a DropPad, which allows you to drag-and-drop links, text and pictures easily for later use in posts.

 

Zoundry Raven – Desktop Blogging Client

WB Editor – Desktop Blogging Client

WB Editor is a commercial blog editor which can interact with all major blogging platforms.  It has WYSIWYG editing capabilities, FTP image uploads, has a plugin architecture, spellchecker(through plugin), tabbed editing interface, inbuilt web browser, automatic updates and more.  You can also blog in online or offline modes using WB Editor.

 

MacJournal – Desktop Blogging Client

MacJournal is a MacOS X commercial blog editor which allows you to blog to platforms like Blogger, WordPress, LiveJournal, and more.  It allows you to easily insert videos, images in you entry.  It also allows you to insert PDFs, QuickTime movies, images, and text in your posts.

 

 

TextMate Blogging – Desktop Blogging Client

SharpMT – Desktop Blogging Client

SharpMT is an offline free blog editor for the Movable Type Platform.  There are 3 versions of the application: desktop, PocketPC and SmartPhone ones.  SharpMT does not support WYSIWYG editing, using plain textboxes for editing of post.  It also has a plugin architecture for further development.

 

AirPress – Desktop Blogging Client

AirPress is a free blog editor built upon the Adobe AIR platform.  It has a very intuitive interface and allows you to edit/manage your posts online, using the local posts database.  It has drag-and-drop support for pictures, sounds, videos, flash animations, etc.  AirPress can only be used for updating Wordpress blogs.

 

Sun Weblog Publisher – Desktop Blogging Client

If you use StarOffice Writer, then this plugin allows you to convert your StarOffice Writer into a blog editor, allowing you to use the power of StarOffice for blogging.  Sun Weblog Publisher allows you to blog to major blogging platforms easily.

 

KBlogger – Desktop Blogging Client

KBlogger is a free KDE environment blog editor, which allows you to blog to major blogging platforms quickly and easily.  It has inbuilt spellchecking and a very minimalistic interface.
