Free Standalone and Integrated Spell Checkers

The page here lists the many free spell checker tools availble around the Internet. These tools are useful if you want to spell check documents from a word processors which does not have a spell checker. However, if you are looking for a word process with integrated spell checker, you might as well check our page on free word processors.

Some of the software listed here have GUI front-ends, while others have a command-line interface. It's up to you to choose the right one for you.

Aspell - Free Standalone Spell Checker

This software is a command-line spell checker although you can use FreeSpell as a front-end to Aspell. This software has been ported to many plaforms including Windows, Linux and others. This software is released under the GNU GPL License.


Excalibur - Free Standalone Spell Checker


This software is open source and can spell check LaTeX and text files. It suggests the words for misspellings for you. This software is released under the GNU GPL License. It works on MAC OS X.

FreeSpell - Free Standalone Spell Checker


This software is a GUI front-end for the popular Aspell command-line based spell checker. It runs under Windows.

IESpell - Free Integrated Spell Checker


This software acts like a plugin for Internet Explorer. It enables you to spell check all the text you enter in forms and input fileds while you are online. However, if you are using Mozilla Firefox (from version 2.0 and upwards), you don't have to install such a thing, since Firefox already has a built-in spell checker. Ispell - Free Standalone Spell Checker


This software is a command-line spell checker for MSDOS, Linux, UNIX and other. You can spell check your files with this software. However, you will need to compile the source to be able to run the software. If you are looking for another (compiled spell checker) which is command-line based, check out Aspell.

TinySpell - Free Standalone Spell Checker


This software does not need integration with any software to be able to spell check. It checks your spelling while you type and a pop-up window appears to warn you in case of a misspelling. TinySpell can also spell check text from the clipboard. This software works on Windows.
